U13B v Belhaven

30th May

The B’s travelled to Belhaven on Wednesday and came up against a very good side. Winning the toss the hosts decided to bat first disregarding the cloud and threat of rain.

A very competent opening pair scored well from the off. Shot selection was excellent, and try as we might our bowlers just couldn’t make any inroads into the Belhaven order. Then at 54, Callum A dropped a catch but picked up and threw in to run out their no. 1 with a direct hit. Another catch went down as Belhaven continued to attack. Caelan b and Ollie E were making good stops though to help keep the run rate lower. Then in the 12th over we took 2 wickets. Firstly “ Harry”, one of our guest Belhaven players, took a catch off Thomas E’s bowling. Then Jake M had another great piece of fielding this week by picking up and direct hitting to run out the remaining opener. At 98 for 2 matters looked better.

However, the taking of wickets didn’t seem to affect the quality of batting. Runs continued, and as the total mounted we began to make errors in the field. We took our final wicket after 17.2 overs, this time “Harry” bowled their no.5. In the field, Archie M was stopping well behind the stumps and Fergus H made a couple of good saves. The runs accelerated now as Belhaven swung the bat for the final 2 overs and took the score onto 166 for 4 in the 20 overs.

Our innings saw Thomas E and Callum A opening. The host bowlers set about their business with pace and accuracy. The 8th ball saw us lose Thomas E with 1 run on the board, edging to the keeper. Jake M quickly followed in the 3rd, bowled off a fine Yorker.  Harry quickly displayed he could bat as well. The score had moved to 49 after 9.2 overs when we lost Callum A run out. Ollie E now came in and showed some nice touches. On the easiest ball he faced he went for it, missed, and was bowled but was our best batsman on the day.

Captain Ollie de G now faced and he tried to fight, but on going for a single was run out. Our 2nd Belhaven guest player now came in. “Freddie” combined well with “Harry” as they added good runs. The latter retiring on making his 50! This brought Archie M to the crease and after making a single was caught at mid- off. Caelan B went first ball, but Fergus H kept out the hat-trick ball. Our last man Hamish R came in at 11 and made a stubborn 6, including an off drive boundary, before being bowled off the last ball of the innings. “Freddie” remained 28 not out. Final score 116 all out in 20 overs.

A big thank you to our 2 guest players who made a big contribution with bat and ball to our team. Our boys tried their best today but were just beaten by a better team. Next week sees form 7 playing Ardvreck at Merchiston.
