On Friday morning, Mr Mike Fraser from the RSPB returned to St. Mary’s to ring some of the chicks hatched in the school’s birdboxes.
We found eight broods ranging from bluetits to nuthatches, grey wagtails and oystercatches.
We were able to ring the pair of oystercatcher chicks atop Melrose Rugby Football Club and an adult female bluetit outside the Hamilton Building.
Mr Fraser will return next week when the other chicks are a wee bit bigger.
Well done to all involved!
The oystercatcher chicks are little fluffy bundles.
Even on the flat roof of Melrose Rugby Football Club they are superbly camouflaged.
The children had a chance to hold and stroke the little chicks.
ID rings were then attached and they were returned to the rooftop.
We have four broods of bluetits nesting in our birdboxes this year.
