1st XI v Mowden Hall

Wednesday 9th May
St. Mary’s won by 105 runs
Well, a Wednesday wouldn’t be a Wednesday without the threat of rain and sure enough again today we had to dodge the showers. However, Mowden’s wicket is always immaculate so a drop of rain wasn’t going to affect the game too much.
Having had two closely contested games already this season, I hoped that today the boys might have learned how to turn close games to their advantage and I was most impressed with the cricket on show. Will lost the toss but fortunately was asked to bat.
William M. and Mac opened the batting and couldn’t have got the innings off to a better start. Defending the good balls and punishing the bad ones, they put on an opening partnership of 62 before Mac (24) was caught and bowled. William M. (26 not out) retired at the end of the over, so Will S. and Jamie picked up the reins and did so very well. They perhaps increased the run rate slightly and both looked very steady. As the overs ticked by, we were keen to get as many boys time at the crease, so Will (38 not out) and Jamie (8 not out) both retired, which paved the way for Tommy and Ollie. The boys knew that time was against them and ran well between the wickets. They perhaps played some shots they might not have played had they had more time and Tommy (12) was bowled trying to hit the ball out of the park! Ollie (5 not out) retired, so Jake and William T. kept the score ticking along. The boys ran well between the wickets, perhaps too well, as Jake was run out courtesy of a direct hit from the keeper. William (2 not out) also retired and allowed Matt & Thomas their chance with a bat. They too kept the scorers busy, but Matt (6) was bowled in the last over. His dismissal gave Alex two balls to face but unluckily for him, the first of his deliveries was probably the bowler’s best of his entire spell and he was bowled. Thomas finished unbeaten on 1 but all their efforts saw the team through to an impressive 151 for 5.

The Mowden reply got off to a good start and the Mowden number two was scoring well. Mac bowled the second over and took a double wicket maiden and this put our hosts on the back foot. We managed to get the majority of our 10 outfielders an over or two bowling and I was quite pleased with the standard. Both Jake and Thomas ended up with impressive figures, both taking two wickets. William T. Alex and Matt also took wickets and there were also some good catches taken by Jamie, William T. and Tommy.
We managed to restrict the Mowden boys to 46 to earn a well deserved win.
This Sunday we head for the Glenalmond 6s competition and next Wednesday we welcome Longridge to St. Mary’s for a 1pm start. Very we done today to the boys; a deserved confidence boost in time for Sunday.
