U11 Rounders v Fettes

Wednesday 25th April
STM 8.5 - Fettes 10.5

It took two attempts to get the match started on Wednesday as torrential rain and hail had everyone on the back pitches running for shelter back up in the main school buildings! However, once the April showers had decided to cease, and everyone had tried to dry off, we marched back down to the pitch pronto and away we went.

Captain Freyja won the toss and opted for St. Mary’s to field first and the girls did a fair job. With no 1st Post due to the incredibly slippy conditions, the girls had to adapt to playing slightly differently. They managed to get four of the Fettes girls out at 2nd Post, however, and a great catch on Fettes’ final ball was a positive end to the innings. No full rounders were scored, but a smattering of halves meant Fettes finished their first 30 balls with 5 rounders.

Having taken time to warm up so well before the rain came, it was a shame that after the pause in proceedings the St. Mary’s girls had lost a bit of focus in the batting box. Fettes’ fielding was slick and they were stumping 4th Post on every ball in order to stop any half or whole rounders being scored. This left us with just 2.5 rounders at the end of the innings.

In our second fielding innings the girls upped their game by getting 7 of the Fettes girls out by various means; 2 more catches and some out at posts. However, at times the girls forgot to focus on the live batter and so by stumping another player out at 3rd post, this resulted in the live batter scoring at 2nd post. Little errors like this can make such a difference and Fettes managed to get 5.5 rounders.

So, with a mountain to climb the St. Mary’s girls set out to bat for the final time. 2 of the girls sadly found themselves out on their very first ball but opportunities were taken when they could be and the girls managed 3 full rounds, despite the increasingly muddy and slippy pitch! Plenty more halves were also scored over the 30 balls and the final 8 balls of the innings were particularly fruitful. The girls managed a total of 6 rounders which ended them on 8.5, just 2 behind their opponents.

It was not the best conditions to be playing rounders in, however, a big thank you to Fettes for still making the journey down to play despite the weather and adapted rules to keep the game safe. Thank you also to the supporters who braved the weather too. Let’s hope for some sunnier weather next week!
