U11A v Merchiston Castle School
On Wednesday afternoon the U11As took on the might of Merchiston Castle School.
A morning downpour had made the surface very heavy and damp but the sun was starting to peak through as Mitchell and Stewart opened the batting. Stewart smashed the ball away through the covers for 4 runs from the opening ball before adding a quick single to complete the opening over.
A light drizzle turned to a torrent before hail stones sent both sides scuttling into the Pavilion where the remained for the next 40 minutes. Fortunately, the rain slackened and the game resumed.
Scottish cricket is often wet but seeing parents watching the game from within their cars with the windscreen wipers on was a definite first for this coach!
With each innings just 15 overs we had to crack on. The swashbuckling Stewart was joined by a number of partners including George, Archie, John, and Ted and the score mounted steadily to a decent 71-4.
It was decided that tea should be foregone in the interest of completing Merchiston’s innings before the next downpour. The pitch was a bit of a mess by this stage but nearly every boy had a whirl bowling at the visiting batsmen. The fielding was superb with Ed, Oliver and Alexander making some super stops in the outfield and Josh, John and Geordie bowling some very tight lines.
As a result, the Merchie batsmen were pinned back and struggled to get the ball off the square. Their score crept up but they were still 20 short of the home target by the time that time ran out.
All in all, it had been a very satisfying afternoon in spite of the inclement weather.
Result: St. Mary’s U11A beat Merchiston Castle School U11A by 20 runs
Man of the match: Stewart M; batted from first to last, bowled well and made a superb direct hit run-out
