St. Mary's U11 Squad retain the Johnston Cup

Tuesday 24th April 2018

The Under 11 squad made the short journey across the road to the Gibson Park to take part in the annual New Image Johnstone Cup touch rugby tournament run by Melrose Primary school. St. Mary's have a very good record in this competition having won it on many occasions, so no pressure on the squad of eleven players selected to take part.

We were drawn in a tough section which included Channelkirk/Westrurther 2, Earlston 1, Melrose 2, and Lauder 1. First up CH/West after a slow start St Marys found their form and run in 5 tries with some fine handling and straight running with no tries scored against. This was followed by a similar game against Melrose 2 with St. Mary's coming out on top by 5-1 another good display. Our third game against Earlston was a different story, a very tight affair. Earlston tested our boys for the first time during the afternoon along with some unusual slack play by St. Mary's resulted in a 1-1 draw. So down to the last of our section games, a must win match if we were to make it to the final. St.  Mary's did not disappoint best performance of the afternoon against a good Lauder team which resulted in a 7-0 victory, a superb display of attacking rugby.
Next up Melrose 1 in the final who had come through their section undefeated so it was always going to be a tough game to win. What a final two teams playing free flow running rugby a right ding-dong battle: St. Mary's scored first 1-0 Melrose responded   1-1, St. Mary's took the lead again 2-1, again Melrose replied 2-2.  St. Mary's for the third time in the match took the lead with a superb team try, with all players involved. At  3-2, a rare missed tackle allowed Melrose back into the game 3-3. Straight from the restart St. Mary's scored what was to be the winning point 4-3. What a great advert with both teams playing very well in what was a very sporting game between to local schools.

All 11 players took part in all matches, a great squad effort. Well done to everyone involved! Thank you to Melrose Primary School for hosting the tournament and to the game coaches/referees who helped make it a pleasant afternoon of sport.
