U11A Netball v Tournament

Wednesday 14th March 2018

Very keen to capitalise on their so far unbeaten season, the girls were in a positive frame of mind as we took to the courts. In Pool B, we played Fettes first and got off to a flying start. The ball was moved rapidly down court, from the centre pass, leaving Willa, Kiki and Imo with little to do for vast chunks of the game, only a couple of wayward passes allowed Fettes to score and we came off court with a 6-2 victory.

Next up we faced Cargilfield, an unknown quantity as our match was cancelled due to snow. Slow off the mark this time, Cargilfield were 2-0 up within the first 2 minutes and it looked like there may be trouble ahead. However, the fighting spirit, for which this group are renowned, came to the fore and 7 goals were netted in quick succession and once again St. Mary’s took control.

A quick chat and then we played Belhaven; having beaten them earlier in the season we knew they would want to make amends. A tight, end to end game, which was definitely won by accurate shooting and good defending (on our part!) Mid court play was very evenly matched, perhaps Belhaven even had the upper hand here! We were thrilled to leave the court with a victory, and a tough fought one; 4-2.

We were then, the Pool winners, and so headed in to the final against Craigclowan. We had played, and beaten them convincingly, last week, but it was vital we did not rest on our laurels. Umpired by neutral staff, this game gave me the opportunity to advise from the side-lines and I was joined by a superbly vocal U13 St. Mary’s team; nerves took over and it was a good 5 minutes before the girls settled in to their game and began to communicate effectively, 5-4 up at half time, there was all to play for. Craigclowan scored early in the second half, equalising the score. To my delight, rather than letting their head’s drop, the girls gritted their teeth, jumped for their lives and fired the ball to our shooters; 7 goals to Craigclowan’s 5 in the second half retained us the U11 title and an unbeaten season!

Goals: Elsa x23, Daisy x 6
