U11 Rugby v Merchiston

The U11’s were welcomed to Edinburgh on Wednesday as both teams eagerly awaited a match that didn’t fall victim to the weather. This week we turned back to the oval ball for our 3rd such meeting of the season.

Our hosts started the match off from the centre after winning the toss and immediately went on the offensive through good offloading out of the tackle. St. Marys saw little possession in these first few minutes, but some good tackling held Merchiston at bay. After that initial home flourish we started to get the ball in our hands ourselves. Ollie de G, Robbie L and Isaac B all had penetrating runs which troubled the home defence. However, it was Merchiston who scored first as some weak St. Marys tackling allowed Merchiston to cross the line. Annoyed with themselves, St. Marys struck back immediately as  Isaac S drove forward then passed to the supporting Jack H who in turn passed wide to Ollie de G who finished well. 1-1

Merchiston then had the better of matters for the next couple of minutes and we began to drop off tackles.  Merchiston took advantage to add 2 further tries. But then it was St. Marys’ turn to press, and we came close but dropped the ball just short of the line. Back came the home team, but a good Toby T chase back stopped a try. During the half St. Marys had handled ball fairly well, but then they dropped a pass which was seized upon by Merchiston who countered well to score in the corner. Halftime 1-4.

The 2nd half started as an even affair. We had our fair share of possession and kept the ball quite well. Tackling was also better as a team. Isaac B had some good forward drives up front aided by Isaac S alongside. Ollie de G was really looking dangerous with his powerful runs. Then Merchiston started to turn the match more in their favour with some attractive running and handling. This resulted in them scoring a well worked try. Back came St. Marys, and good runs by Robbie L and Isaac S saw us being awarded a penalty. Again Isaac S drove on for Ollie de G to finish off. 2-5. More slack tackling let us down and Merchiston added another. Again we tried to make amends and were rewarded as Ollie de G ran well to score our third.

Merchiston then pressed our line, but a good pick up and pass from Torquil H allowed us to clear. Toby T then got his hands on the ball and ran well up the left and was stopped just short. The 2 Isaacs then combined well which gave space for Ollie de G to add another! 4-6. Robbie L looked to get in on the act with a good stepping run. But it was our hosts who had the final say as they strove to add to their total. Another good Isaac B tackle looked to have kept them out, but another phase of play got them over. 4-7 and time up.

Well done to all boys, it was good to get a rugby match again .Yes a little rusty at times, especially our defence, but there was also some really nice play when we had ball in hand. Next week the B’s are away to Cargilfield.
