3rds Netball V Fettes

Wednesday 21st Feb 2018

The team: Ruby (c), Libby, Emma, Anna, Hannah, Lucy M, Molly C & Phoebe

Following their emphatic win against Belhaven at the end of January, confidence today was high and the girls took to the court with a spring in their step. The Fettes girls seemed tall, a trait that was apparent in all the Fetes teams today. However, used to playing against tall opposition, the girls knew that some pop passes and bounce passes might prove essential today.

As the game unfolded, the height of the Fettes girls was having an impact on the game. However, in the first quarter particularly, our movement off the ball was superb and what we lacked in height, we made up for in finding space. The quarter was very well balanced and it finished 3 - 2 to our visitors.

The second period saw much the same only our movement was perhaps not so effective nor our passes as clinical. Libby, Molly and Lucy all worked really well in the centre of the court and supported both their attack and defence really well. Hannah and Phoebe were really being put through their paces in defence but responded brilliantly to the pressure and had they not been so effective, the Fettes girls may well have scored many more goals. Emma and Ruby both had to mark a very agile and energetic girl and did well to gain as much possession. Their distribution too was good. Molly and Anna also had a tricky time of it, trying to create space to receive passes. However, they both did just that and they both found the target.

The third quarter was a repeat of the first, very evenly matched with both sides working extremely hard off the ball to retain possession. Fettes clinched it 2 – 1 but we went into the final period knowing we could still win it back! Molly was on target immediately after the restart, quickly followed by Anna who also found the net. At this point I thought this was going to be the comeback of the season, but the Fettes girls steadied their ship and saw out a well deserved 14 – 7 win.

I hope today the girls proved to themselves that despite a taller opposition, their accurate passing and good movement off the ball will always win possession. Very well done to you all for another determined performance. Next week we travel to Loretto, who got the better of us last time, but that was 5 weeks ago!
