U13A Football v Fettes

Wednesday 31st Jan
STM 1 - Fettes 2

Waking up to a blanket of snow in Melrose this morning, followed by snow during the morning lessons the questions were asked…..what is the weather like in Edinburgh? Is the game on??  Thankfully the answers for both those questions were its clear blue skies, however freezing, and yes the game is on!

With smiles on the boys faces they clambered onto the bus and trekked up to Fettes where after a really quick warm up the game kicked off.  St. Mary’s started passing the ball around from the help of Tommy and Ollie E in the middle of midfield trying to make the Fettes team work for the ball, and with behind their backs we tried to deploy the long ball tactic to set up the front men of Jamie F and Alex F and the wingers, Will S and Caelan B. This was working well keeping Fettes deep in their half but they were catching us out on the counter attack and it wasn’t long until they really struck and managed to stick a goal away. St. Mary’s kept pressing on and on the stroke of half time with a little bit of luck from a corner, saw the ball strike Jamie’s leg and trickle in the goal.

It was clear to see that the freezing wind was taking its toll on the boys and after a few fast star jumps and a set of high knees the second half kicked off. Fettes used the same tactic as we did in the first using the wind to their advantage to keep us pinned back and it was certainly effective. The St. Mary’s defence of Archie M, Matt B, Thomas E and Will T struggled against the wind to get the ball anywhere up the field, so the attack kept coming and coming. It wasn’t until a bit of luck saw a Fettes shot deflect off a defender and trickle past Ollie C in goals, who was having another outstanding performance between the sticks.  A couple of times the ball made it past the Fettes attack into the midfield and Tommy on two occasions realised the space in behind, and unleashing Will S to have one on one opportunities with the Fettes keeper. Unfortunately Will could not capitalise on these chances and the final score finished 2-1 to Fettes.

The skill level and style of play keeps improving each week, which is a massive positive for these boys, and despite this weeks result it was another brilliant performance. Well done boys!
