About Us

Friends of St. Mary's

The ‘Friends of St Mary’s’ welcome all parents.

We warmly welcome all parents to join our Friends’ committee.  We are a group of enthusiastic parents and our aim is to enhance the time that all pupils and parents spend at St Mary’s.  We do this by organising meetings and social events and we fundraise for the school and other charitable causes.  Alternatively many parents volunteer to help at specific events throughout the year.

Through our fundraising we are able to:

provide the little ‘extras’ that would not normally be covered by the school’s budget

Items which FoSM have purchased for the school include:
  • Team shirts for the 1st XV rugby matches
  • Igloo tents for match days to shelter children and belongings
  • Footballs and netballs, goalie equipment
  • Hire of local Astroturf facilities for hockey matches
  • Electric piano for the Morrison Hall
  • Equipment for the boarding house
  • Books and software to support the academic curriculum
  • Moving, refitting and cataloguing the school library
  • £5,000 contribution towards the school’s third minibus

Fulfil requests on staff wish lists

Each year we invite the St Mary’s staff to provide a wish list of items that they feel would benefit the majority of children and which perhaps fall outside the school budget.  Such items purchased by FoSM have been:
  • Sound System for the Music Department
  • Lighting system for the Drama Department
  • Bench saw for the Design and Technology Department
  • Sausage machine and beef burger machine for the school kitchen
support our annually selected charity in addition to joining in national charities’ school events

The committee chooses a charity for the year to whom we present a cheque at the end of year school assembly.  We welcome all suggestions so if there is a charity you would like to nominate, please contact us (see below).

For 2014/15 we have selected Columba 1400 suggested by a former St Mary’s parent.
  • Columba 1400 works with vulnerable young people aged 14-24 in partnership with schools, secondary support units, residential units, young carers services, social work services and voluntary organisations.
We also support other causes through the year such as Macmillan, Comic Relief and local charities

We organise regular social events - in the past we’ve held:
  • Curry nights, quiz nights
  • Fashion shows, Boden shopping days
  • Lectures, competitions
  • Barbecues, cookery demonstrations

Each year we organise the following events for the school calendar:
  • Winter Wonderland, a Christmas fair for pupils and their parents.  Held in the Morrison Hall, the children excitedly anticipate the stalls , games and visit by Father Christmas;
  • Summer Fair, held in the school grounds for all to enjoy. An internet security talk is offered by FoSM and to which all parents are invited for the safety and protection of their children and friends while online.

The Friends of St Mary’s have a busy agenda which we discuss at our monthly meeting.  Meeting dates are notified in the .mail weekly newsletter from the Headmaster and on our 4 noticeboards (Hamilton building opposite the office, Sanderson building opposite Form 3, outside Upper Transition classroom above bike rack, Kindergarten LHS of door).  We meet in the Dining Room at 8.30 am after drop off with coffee and biscuits kindly provided by Chef!  Please keep an eye out and do drop by at our next date.
