2nd XI Cricket v Loretto

Wednesday 28th June

2nd Cricket 28 june 17

A break in the recent wet weather on Wednesday meant that we were able to play our final match of the season up at Loretto. The amount of rain had made the pitch soft, and indeed when Loretto won the toss they put us into bat in this 20 overs match.

Our openers, Jamie F and Matt B, as well as looking to set a foundation they had to guard against the frequent low bounces. They started cautiously but did a good job in not losing an early wicket. However, the understandable caution led to a low run rate but then they started to accelerate encouraged by teammates from the side-line!

Then Matt B was run out for 7 as the boys looked to push on. The partnership was an excellent 27, but 9.2 overs were used. Alex F came in next and looked to hit out but was caught early when on 3. Then our borrowed Loretto player entered the fray and made a quick 14 before we retired him. Jamie F was gaining in confidence and starting to time the ball better. Our captain of the day Ollie C then stepped in but unfortunately that low bounce influenced and Ollie was unluckily bowled out for 1.

William T was then bowled first ball, but the Loretto umpire adjudged that William wasn’t ready at the crease so was reprieved. However William is a sympathetic boy so he obliged Cameron the bowler by being bowled again next ball! Facing a hat trick Dicken B was in and not only did he keep out the ball he also made a single. On 4 after his 5 balls Dicken swung at the last ball of the innings but was bowled. Well done to Jamie who made an excellent 25 not out and carried his bat. We made a decent 72-5 on a slow outfield so the boys were buoyant going into the Loretto innings.

Fergus H opened the bowling with the boys looking for that early strike. Hit for 2 first ball, Fergus kept composed and took a great caught and bowled the next! Just the start they hoped for. Loretto steadied the ship though and looked good as they quickly got to 15 in 3 overs. Ollie C was initially finding good length elusive, but then he found it and bowled out 2 in 3 balls!

St. Marys fielding was keen as the boys sensed a win was on. Antony de G and Hamish R were stopping any potential boundary in the deep and each bowled a good over. But Loretto recovered to 27 and again looked steady. Just when we needed it, William T made the breakthrough and bowled out the no. 3. Loretto were still up on the run rate so St. Marys had to take wickets. Again William T obliged as Alex F took a good close in catch off William’s bowling.

A run later and now Matt B got in on the act by striking the stumps off a good line and length ball. The 7th went down through a hit wicket and now the boys were throwing themselves around to stop runs. Loretto were still scoring though and had plenty of overs left to get the required runs .On 56 they were closing in on the St. Marys total, with St. Marys needing 2 wickets to win.

Jamie F now came onto bowl from keeping stumps and he came up trumps with a fantastic caught and bowled with his first ball! He got 2 hands to it as it flew powerfully above his head. 1 more wicket required. William T was back on bowling and had a good LBW shout turned down, but on the final ball of his over again a big shout went up for LBW and this time it was given and he took his 3rd wicket.

A great win with our best bowling of the season allied to sharpness and encouragement in the field seeing us through. .Loretto were well up on the run rate so we had to bowl them out .

Well done.
