U9A Rounders Triangular

v Belhaven School and Cargilfield
Wednesday 10th May 2017

St Mary’s V Belhaven
Belhaven School were the first to arrive so anticipating a busy afternoon we started this game promptly. St Mary’s won the toss (very good odds this term) and elected to field. Continuing on from last week’s excellent fielding St Mary’s started strongly and efficiently stumped out three players and caught a third in the first half of the game. Belhaven managed to keep their remaining player in but struggled to score rounders and finished their innings with 3 ½  rounders scored.

St Mary’s then went in to bat feeling confident they would be able to notch up a winning score. Nearly all of the team scored at least half a rounder, made good running decisions and accumulated 9 ½ rounders, a convincing win.

St Mary’s V Cargilfield
Though confident after their Belhaven win, St Mary’s were under no illusions  about how difficult the second game was going to be against Cargilfield who have been strong opposition throughout the year. Again, lucky St Mary’s won yet another toss and gained the advantage of fielding first and then knowing how many rounders they would need to have a chance of winning. Cargilfields first few players were able batters and they all scored either whole or half rounders despite some excellent retrieves and post stumping from St Mary’s. St Mary’s gave away 5 half rounders for no balls and obstructions making the cargilfield final score 8 rounders.

It was obvious when batting that St Mary’s were more tentative. They felt the pressure to make contact with bat and ball and score rounders, which had a negative effect. They didn’t bat as well as usual and scored half rather than full rounders, making their score creep up slowly. Despite some brave running St Mary’s managed  6 ½ rounders which meant Cargilfield took the game. St Mary’s should not be disheartened, it was a very close game and Cargilfield were very impressed with the St Mary’s fielding commenting that it was the best they has seen. Hopefully the team can work on batting as well under pressure as they do when they are well ahead on the score sheet.

Another excellent week of rounders. Cargilfield narrowly beat Belhaven during that game.
